Autism Spectrum Disorders

Autism Spectrum Disorders refer to a number of conditions which affect the way  a person perceives and reacts with the world. Autism cannot be cured because it is not a disease or an illness. However, the areas of difficulties which a person with autism has, can be managed successfully. No two people with autism are the same as the condition presents with different traits, hence the spectrum in the name. However, there are some common difficulties that may be experienced by people with autism:

  • Speech and language
  • Social interaction
  • Repetitive behaviour
  • Limited or no imagination

The cause of autism is still unknown but there are suggestions that it is influenced by genetic and environmental factors. Often times, autism can co-exist with other developmental conditions, a situation known as co-morbidity.  The key to managing autism is early diagnosis and intervention. Discuss any concerns you have with your child’s pediatrician.
