Intellectual/ Learning Disability

This is a neurological condition which affects an individual’s ability to learn and process information resulting in an increased difficulty in carrying out day to day tasks.  A learning disability can occur as a result of anything affecting the proper development of the brain before childbirth, during childbirth or at early childhood. It is possible to detect some learning disabilities at childbirth but sometimes this may not happen until toddler stage. Learning disability should not be confused with learning difficulties because while the former involves reduced intellectual ability, the latter can occur with an intact intellectual ability. The level of support that will be needed by a person with learning disability depends on the specifics of the person’s needs. Always discuss any concerns you have with your child’s pediatrician.
